    Inspired by Matt Bell, who has an enviable appetite for reading, I wrote down my top 100 books, organized by author. If you were to demand I choose a solitary tome for my desert island vacation, it’d probably be Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel.

    But, I said only 97 books, yes? One author recently fell from grace in my pantheon by attacking another author of smaller means. He used his stardom to punish someone who could not fight back, sending his merciless internet hounds to her door. I’ve never been so disappointed in a hero. Alas, deleted. You’ll see the empty slots awaiting new voices.
